Many of the ideas to advance the transformation of the German economy into a green economy are conceived and tested in the laboratories of German research institutes and companies. Before they can be applied commercially, they need scientifically-based further development to an industrial scale. Testing their technical and economic feasibility is done in prototype and reference installations that are not without economic risks.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the funding measure “r+Impuls – innovative technologies for resource efficiency – impulses for industrial resource efficiency” to support the decisive but risky step from the laboratory to the market. This helps green economy innovations to quickly get to where they can strengthen the market position of companies and Germany’s position as a high-tech location.

The support provided by “r+Impuls” focused on innovative technologies that lower the consumption of materials and energy in resource-intensive production systems, substitute critical raw materials, reclaim valuable resources from waste streams or utilize the greenhouse gas CO2 as a resource.
